Board of Directors Meeting

May 12, 2018

The meeting was called to order at 11:07am by Doris Hill. The pledges and moment of silence were led by Doris Hill and Norma Waters. Introductions were made of guests: Brandon Watson (California Casualty), Vincent Torres (NTA), Sandra Hudson (TSTA Staff), Evelina Loya (TSTA Retired VP-Elect) and Barbara Davis-Staley (TSTA Retired, President Elect).

The agenda was adopted with flexibility (Sandra Patterson, Norma Waters; voice vote). The approval of the minutes was moved by Koni Kaiwi and seconded by Norma Waters (approved; voice vote). The Financial report was submitted by André Williams and read by Winifred Jackson. There were questions regarding regional dues deposit. The Financial Report was moved by Sandra Patterson / Norma Waters and approved.

PAC Committee reported election season has started; elections started on May 5, 2018 for local school board.

Local and State Committee Reports were next on the agenda. Tyler: Roylena Stewart-Sparrow report 6 new members. North Lamar: Sandra Patterson reported plans to do something for teachers. Garland: no report at this time. Grand Prairie: Doris Hill reported presentation to the superintendent at the End of Year social. Longview: Winifred Jackson reported School Board Election are starting.

TSTA State HOD Report was next on the agenda. Norma Waters reported it was great and recommended contacting media for more coverage for the march. Hilda Martinez reported Koni Kaiwi was named TSTA ESP of the Year. Becky Cerliano (Retired) reported passage of a New business item at the HOD: an amendment up for approval next year to purchase “TSTA-R/NEA-R Lifetime Membership” for three years in advance. Barbara Davis Staley stated Retired School Personnel invited all retiring DISD employees to attend a meeting Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 10:00 am in the Dallas Public Library. Winifred Jackson reported that 11 people were select submit receipts upon returning from the NEA RA for reimbursement. Sandra Hudson (TSTA Staff) reported that Mrs. Charles Wilson, Marshall ISD School Board Member, passed away. Mrs. Wilson was a strong advocate for public education.

Vincent Torres presented a presentation about supplemental benefits that are offered by National Teacher Associates-Life. Brandon Watson presented a presentation about taking a journey with us via auto, home, renters and umbrella policies. André Williams won the television that was given away by NTA-Life.

Budget Planning 2018-2019 date will be sent out via a survey to determine which date is suitable for members. Possible dates are July 9th and 10th, July 10th and 11th, or July 19th and 20th. All budget plans are due August 1, 2018.

The meeting adjourned a 1:30 p.m.
